Charges have been filed against a man from South Brunswick who allegedly made threats to kill a Florida sheriff who had stood up against a neo-Nazi hate group. Richard Golden, aged 38, was arrested at his mother’s residence in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.
Authorities have claimed that Golden made anonymous threats online to kill Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood during a 4chan chat on Feb. 22, where he and other users were discussing Chitwood’s response to recent hate activity in Florida.
According to officials, Golden allegedly wrote, “Just shoot Chitwood in the head and murder him.”
Officials were able to identify Golden, and he was arrested on Monday, with an extradition to Florida expected.
Chitwood, who has faced multiple attempts to intimidate him and his family by “Nazi sympathizers and hate group supporters” due to his stance against such groups, stated that he cannot wait to meet Golden when he gets off the plane, as one of the first faces he will see upon arrival at the Volusia County Jail will be Chitwood’s.
Golden has been charged with making a written threat to kill or cause injury.
