Mother Struck, Critically Injured While Crossing Road with Young Children in Toms River

A young mother was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle in Toms River on Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. as the mother, who is in her 20s, was crossing Old Freehold Road at Lakewood Road with her two young children.

The mother was pushing her infant in a stroller and accompanying her 2-year-old son on foot at the time of the accident.

The driver, a man also in his 20s, was making a left turn onto Old Freehold Road from Lakewood Road. He claimed to have proceeded with the turn after observing a break in traffic but failed to notice the young family in the crosswalk.

As a result of the impact, the mother sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center by EMS, where she remains in critical condition. Hatzolah was not called to the scene. Her son suffered a hand injury during the incident.

While the stroller was overturned, the infant was not seriously injured. It appears the mother heroically pushed the stroller out of the way just before being struck, potentially saving her children’s lives.
