MAILBAG: Why Is Gov. Murphy Amplifying A Notorious Anti-Semite?

The following is a copy of a letter shared with Lakewood Alerts that a local resident sent to Gov. Phil Murphy’s press office:
Et tu Murphy?
That is what struck me when I read a press release sent out today by your press office. “Rev. Al Sharpton to Deliver Eulogy at Funeral for Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver,” was the title. After dropping the bombshell that this notorious Anti Semite and rabble-rouser would be speaking at the funeral of the esteemed late Lt. Governor, the statement includes a quote from Sharpton, followed by a description of Sharpton’s organization, which, if it would not be so demented, would be funny.
“Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN works within the spirit and tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to promote a modern civil rights agenda that includes the fight for one standard of justice, decency, and equal opportunities for all people regardless of race, religion, nationality, or gender,” the description, included in an official press release from the Murphy press team, notes.
Governor Murphy. Please don’t let the rigors of time erode the impact of a dark history. Al Sharpton is an Anti Semite of the worst kind. Three decades ago, he was a primary driver of the Crown Heights riots, and has said so many indefensible hateful comments about Jews since. He stood on the blood of a murdered Jew and revved up a torrent of hate against Jews, just because they were Jews. I point you to an article about him, usefully archived on the website of the US Congress: https://www.congress.gov/116/meeting/house/109952/documents/HHRG-116-JU00-20190919-SD033.pdf
Mr. Governor, hatred and bigotry is not a partisan issue. No matter what you believe or who you vote for, such unadulterated hatred should never be tolerated, not here, not anywhere.
Al Sharpton should not be welcomed here in New Jersey. And certainly not by the official administration of a sitting governor.
Thank you,
A Concerned New Jersey Resident
