Interstate 95 to Reopen Today, Far Ahead of Schedule, After Deadly Collapse in Philadelphia

Interstate 95 is set to reopen to traffic on Friday, less than two weeks after a tragic collapse in Philadelphia forced the closure of a vital segment of the East Coast’s primary north-south highway. Workers have been diligently working to complete an interim six-lane roadway that will accommodate motorists during the construction of a permanent bridge. With the project progressing faster than anticipated, the interstate is scheduled to resume operations at noon, as confirmed by the governor’s office.

The elevated section of I-95 collapsed in the early hours of June 11 following a fatal accident involving a gasoline-carrying tractor-trailer that overturned on an off-ramp and caught fire. State transportation officials attributed the incident to the driver losing control while navigating a curve. Fortunately, there were no other casualties or injuries reported.

The closure of the critical commercial route caused significant traffic congestion in and around Philadelphia, while also posing the potential to raise consumer goods’ costs due to truckers being forced to take detours. In response, state and federal authorities swiftly pledged to mitigate the economic impact and minimize inconvenience.

To expedite the reopening of I-95, workers employed approximately 2,000 tons (1,814 metric tons) of lightweight glass nuggets to fill the underpass and raise it to ground level. The surface was subsequently paved, resulting in the creation of three lanes of travel in each direction. Although this serves as a temporary solution, plans are in place for the construction of a permanent bridge.

President Joe Biden recently accompanied Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro on a helicopter tour of the site, expressing admiration for the “incredibly innovative” design that enabled the completion of the work in record time.

With rain threatening to impede the reopening, officials have been prompted to  deploy a truck-mounted jet dryer, typically used to keep racetracks dry. This measure aims to maintain optimal conditions for the freshly laid asphalt, allowing for the prompt painting of lane markings.

As the clock ticks closer to noon, motorists eagerly anticipate the restoration of Interstate 95, restoring a vital transportation artery and facilitating smoother travel along the East Coast.
