One of the most endearing aspects of life in Yerushalayim is the existence of its Shabbos loudspeakers, which begin playing music as shkiah approaches before blaring out a warning siren just head of the arrival of Shabbos.
Many years ago, Lakewood had such a siren, sans the music, on a home on Forest Avenue – similar to the sirens that sounds until this day in some neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The Lakewood siren was shut down about 20 years ago due to noise complaints. But Shabbos sirens are now making a comeback in Lakewood neighborhoods.
One neighborhood in Lakewood, Raintree, installed their own Shabbos siren earlier this year. And now several other neighborhoods are getting in on it.
A Shabbos siren is planned for installation in the Ridge neighborhood in the next few weeks. Additional sirens are being discussed in various other neighborhoods, as well, including Chestnut and West Gate.
Theres already one on top of the new satmar shul on Kennedy. It’s beautiful
