Sen. Sam Thompson Says Republican Leadership Has “Abandoned” Him, Will Run as Democrat

State Sen. Sam Thompson, whose district includes Jackson, said he will run for a fifth term as a Democrat, with the former Trump delegate insisting that he’s not abandoning Republican principles.

“I don’t feel I am leaving my party,” Thompson said.  “I feel my party leadership has abandoned me.”

Republican Party leaders in New Jersey have been pushing the 87-year-old Thompson to retire, with plans to have him replaced by the much younger mayor of Old Bridge, Owen Henry. But Thompson says he’s not done just yet.

It isn’t yet clear whether Thompson will have a shot at winning the Democratic nomination for the seat, never mind winning the general election against a party-backed candidate in Owens.
