Lakewood To Receive Federal Funding To Purchase New Electric School Buses

The federal Environmental Protection Agency has announced their 2023 Clean School Bus Grant Program providing $400 million in grants for electric school buses. The EPA has designated 54 New Jersey school districts as priority, with Lakewood named as one of them.

An additional 145 school districts are eligible to self-certify as priority. School districts can apply individually or as part of a third-party application in conjunction with three or more other districts.

The grants will provide up to $395,000 per electric bus purchased by eligible districts.

The EPA said the purpose of the grants are to “replace older diesel school buses with new “clean” school buses to reduce diesel emissions, particularly in underserved school districts, tribal schools, and private fleets.”

School districts will have to apply for the grant money. Applications are due Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at 11:59PM ET.
