Woman Killed in Late-Night Crash on Lakewood Road in Toms River; Driver Suspected of Impairment

A woman was killed in a late-night crash in Toms River last night after a vehicle lost control and collided head-on with her car.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:05 p.m. on Saturday night at the intersection of Lakewood Road and Whitty Road.

Investigators determined that a Volkswagen Jetta traveling southbound on Lakewood Road struck a guardrail on the passenger side. The impact caused the vehicle to lose control and cross into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with a northbound Honda Accord.

The driver of the Honda was rushed to Community Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in stable condition.

Authorities said officers at the scene observed signs that the Volkswagen driver appeared to be impaired. As part of the investigation, a court-authorized blood draw was conducted at the hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit–Vehicular Homicide Squad in coordination with the Toms River Township Police Department.

Investigators have not yet released the identity of the deceased driver.
