WATCH: US Rep. Josh Gottheimer Celebrates His Constituent Edan Alexander’s Freedom From Hamas

U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), one of Congress’s most vocal champions of Israel, marked the homecoming of Edan Alexander, a former constituent held hostage by Hamas for 584 days, in a touching moment shared with Lakewood Alerts.

In a video filmed in his congressional office, Gottheimer is seen moving Alexander’s photo from a prominent “Wall of Hostages” — where the faces of those kidnapped on October 7th have been displayed — to a separate wall showcasing individuals who have since been rescued or freed.

Alexander, a U.S.-Israeli dual citizen, was one of the longest-held hostages from the Hamas attack, and his release has stirred bipartisan reactions of hope of securing the freedom of those still in captivity.

Gottheimer, who represents New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District, has become a leading national voice in support of Israel since the October 7th Hamas massacre. His unwavering support has won praise from Jewish leaders and pro-Israel advocates nationwide — and it has also become a defining element of his bid for higher office.

With the Democratic primary for New Jersey governor rapidly approaching on June 10, Gottheimer is in a tight six-way race alongside Mikie Sherrill, Ras Baraka, Sean Spiller, Steve Fulop, and Steve Sweeney. Political analysts say the contest remains wide open, with no clear frontrunner.

Lakewood is poised to play an outsized role in determining the outcome. With thousands of potential votes up for grabs, observers say a large turnout in Lakewood could tip the balance in the closely watched primary.
