The Sheraton Crossroads Hotel, a 22-story landmark in Bergen County, was demolished in a controlled implosion, ending its nearly 40-year presence at the intersection of Routes 17 and 287. The 225-room hotel, which opened in 1986, was brought down in 30 seconds at 7:40 a.m., with the Township of Mahwah livestreaming the event.
It was a well-known landmark for travelers from Lakewood heading to the Catskills. Built on the former Ford Mahwah Assembly Plant site, which operated from 1955 to 1980, the hotel faced challenges during the pandemic, leading to its closure in December 2023.
Crossroads Hotel Developers LLC, the property owners, have yet to finalize plans for the 140-acre site. While early proposals included two warehouses, discussions have shifted toward “light industrial” development. In August 2024, the township council approved increasing the site’s maximum building size from 1.7 million to 4 million square feet, signaling ambitious redevelopment.
