In New Jersey, utilities are operated by private companies, but any rate increases must be approved by the Board of Public Utilities (BPU). Recently, the BPU allowed New Jersey Natural Gas to raise rates by 16%, adding to a series of significant rate hikes since 2022. This comes at a time when costs across the board—food, insurance, and taxes—are rising, creating a financial burden that is crippling for New Jersey families.
Congressman Josh Gottheimer highlighted that these increases are occurring while utility companies are struggling to provide reliable services, with frequent brownouts and blackouts across the grid. Additionally, these companies are falling behind on connecting new construction projects, leaving homes and businesses waiting months or even years to join the grid.
To address these issues, Congressman Gottheimer unveiled a plan to lower utility costs:
Demanding a Rate Reversal: Gottheimer is sending a letter to the BPU and utility providers, urging them to reverse the recent rate hike on families immediately.
Introducing the Energy Costs Relief Act: This legislation would offer a refundable tax credit of up to $350 to help families manage rising energy costs.
Proposing the Know Your Rates Act: Modeled after State Senator John Burzichelli’s legislation, this bill would require utility companies to notify customers if their energy usage exceeds their monthly average. Notifications would be sent by phone, email, or text at 10 days and 20 days into the billing cycle, giving families a chance to adjust their usage or prepare for higher electric bills.
