On Monday, the nation observes Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This national holiday, originally known as Armistice Day, was first established by President Woodrow Wilson on the anniversary of World War I’s end. In 1954, following both World War II and the Korean War, Congress expanded the holiday to recognize veterans of all conflicts, renaming it Veterans Day.
Veterans Day celebrations are marked across the country with parades, ceremonies, and events, reflecting the nation’s gratitude for its service members. Federal offices, as well as many state offices, close for the day, along with public institutions and certain private businesses. Here’s a look at what will be open and closed on Veterans Day in New Jersey and around the country.
Closures and Limited Services
As Veterans Day is a state holiday in New Jersey, state offices and courts will be closed. Most banks, including major institutions like Bank of America, Chase Bank, and TD Bank, will also be closed in observance of the federal holiday.
In the financial sector, the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will remain open on Veterans Day. However, bond markets will close for the day.
U.S. Postal Service facilities will be closed on Monday, halting residential and business deliveries, except for Priority Mail Express. Standard delivery and collection will resume on Tuesday.
Shipping Services on Veterans Day
UPS services, including The UPS Store locations, will be open on Veterans Day. However, deliveries via UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations, which partner with the U.S. Postal Service, will require an extra business day due to USPS closures.
FedEx will maintain normal operations on Veterans Day, with exceptions for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy, which will operate on a modified schedule. Additionally, on the day before Veterans Day, Sunday, November 10, some FedEx services, including FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Ground Economy, and FedEx Freight, will suspend operations.
Retail and Motor Vehicle Closures
All New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission facilities, including agencies, road test sites, and inspection stations, will be closed on Veterans Day as part of state observance.
Meanwhile, major retail stores like Target and Walmart will remain open, though it’s recommended that customers check local store hours, as individual businesses may adjust hours for the holiday.
