Two women charged in connection with the devastating August 28 crash in Jackson Township that claimed the life of baby Yitzchok Rosenberg Z”L will remain behind bars while their cases proceed, authorities announced Tuesday.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill ordered on September 1 that 20-year-old Maria Cobon-Guzman of Trenton and 22-year-old Ariadna Lazaro-Flores of Toms River remain detained in the Ocean County Jail pending trial.
As previously reported by Lakewood Alerts, Cobon-Guzman was charged with Manslaughter, Operating a Motor Vehicle Without Ever Having Possessed or Been Issued a Valid Driver’s License While Involved in a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash, and two counts of Assault by Auto following the August 28 crash.
The collision tragically claimed the life of baby Yitzchok Rosenberg Z”L and left his mother and another child injured.
Lazaro-Flores, who was also charged in connection with the case, faces a charge of Knowingly Engaging in Conduct Creating a Substantial Risk of Death to Another. Judge Rahill similarly ordered her detained in the Ocean County Jail.
The latest court action comes after Lakewood Alerts reported that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement moved to deport the illegal immigrants charged in connection with the crash.
The detention hearings were handled by Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Heisler.
Both women will now remain in custody as the criminal cases against them move forward.
The charges are accusations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
