Two swimmers drowned and a third is missing after a busy Labor Day weekend at the Jersey Shore, authorities announced Tuesday.
One drowning occurred in Belmar, when a 42-year-old was pulled unconscious from the ocean and subsequently pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The second drowning happened in Beach Haven, when a 22-year-old Dominican Republican national lost his life.
A third presumed drowning victim disappeared beneath the waves in Seaside Park, with a search and rescue operation continuing on Tuesday.
The ocean this weekend was more treacherous than usual, as swimmers had to contend with strong rip currents from Hurricane Franklin which passed off the coast of New Jersey.
