Two Lakewood Men Charged with 2010 Toms River Murder After Cold Case Breakthrough

Ocean County First Assistant Prosecutor Michael T. Nolan, Jr., announced that Maurice Cole, 36, and Jerron Evans, 41, both of Lakewood, were charged with murder on Tuesday 2024, in connection with the death of 22-year-old Rondell Proctor, who was killed in Toms River on May 27, 2010.

On the night of the crime, Toms River police responded to a shooting at Winteringham Village Apartments on Route 166 around 12:45 a.m. Officers found Proctor, an Arkansas native, with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso and face. Despite being rushed to Community Medical Center, Proctor was pronounced dead.

The case went cold for years, but new investigative techniques and advancements in evidence testing reignited the investigation, leading to the charges against Cole and Evans. Authorities took the suspects into custody without incident on December 3, with support from multiple local, county, and federal agencies.

Both men are being held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.

Prosecutor Nolan praised the collaboration between agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, local police departments, and federal partners, calling their combined efforts critical in bringing this case to justice after more than a decade.
