A tornado watch has been issued for 17 counties in New Jersey, effective until 2 p.m. Friday, as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby bring a wet and stormy day to the region. Residents in the affected areas are advised to be prepared to act quickly if a tornado warning is issued.
The watch includes the following counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren.
In addition to the tornado watch, a wind advisory is in place until 8 p.m., with gusty winds expected to blow around unsecured objects and potentially bring down trees. The National Weather Service warns of frequent gusts of 35 to 45 mph winds, combined with saturated grounds, leading to possible power outages.
A flood watch is also in effect through 1 a.m., with heavy rainfall expected to produce 1 to 2 inches of rain, and locally higher amounts of 3 inches or more possible. Forecasters warn of potential flooding and urge residents to be cautious.
The storm is expected to clear out by Shabbos morning, with sunny skies and a high of 84 degrees forecasted.
