Toms River Promotes Peter Sundack to Acting Police Chief Following Chief Little’s Retirement

Peter Sundack has been named acting police chief of Toms River following the retirement of Chief Mitchell Little in August. Sundack, who has served as a lieutenant since 2018, was promoted to captain and named acting chief, Mayor Daniel Rodrick announced during Wednesday night’s Township Council meeting.

Sundack has been in charge of the department since Little’s retirement on Aug. 23 due to his seniority. He and Lt. Guy Maier were both promoted to captain, Rodrick said.

Although Sundack was congratulated as chief by Toms River Councilman Justin Lamb, it was later clarified that he is serving as acting chief because of a township ordinance requiring police chiefs to have served at least one year as captain before officially taking on the role.

Rodrick noted that the township is exploring legal options to promote Sundack to the permanent position of police chief sooner. For now, Sundack is expected to continue as acting chief for the foreseeable future.
