A man who accused Toms River police of attacking him for no reason is eating crow – and facing charges – after the police department released bodycam footage of what actually occurred.
The resident, Jamaal Holmes, posted a clip on Instagram which he claims shows that he was unfairly attacked by police officers. Holmes said that he called 911 multiple times for help with regard to a child custody dispute, but got no response. He finally flagged down cops who were sitting up the street from him, and as he walked back towards his home, the police officers attacked him.
Here’s the video he posted.
But is what Holmes claimed the truth about what happened. Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little says no – and released bodycam footage to prove it.
“It is not often I respond to negative comments on our social media, however, due to the nature of the claims against my officers, I feel the need to address this issue. I will not tolerate hate, or the promotion of hate, ignorance, and misinformation regarding any of my officers or the Toms River Police Department,” Chief Little wrote.
“Our officers responded to a incident where the caller had an extensive history of violence. What the video circulating social media does not show is our officers multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation and Jamaal Holmes retreating from them and striking the officer multiple times. As Mr. Holmes continued to disregard officer’s commands, my officers were well within their legal rights and training to restrain Mr. Holmes, as well as, follow him into the residence to ensure the safety of everyone at the scene. Mr. Holmes was charged appropriately.”
