An off-duty Toms River Township police officer has been charged with a series of serious crimes following a violent home invasion in Berkeley Township last week.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on April 28, 2025, Rebecca Sayegh, 32, of Toms River, was formally charged with Home Invasion Burglary, two counts of Assault, two counts of Criminal Mischief, Terroristic Threats, and Resisting Arrest. The charges stem from a chaotic series of events that unfolded late Friday night, April 25.
At approximately 11:20 p.m., Berkeley Township Police responded to a frantic call reporting a domestic disturbance at a home on Evernham Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Sayegh had allegedly shattered the residence’s front glass door to forcibly enter the home. Once inside, authorities say, she violently assaulted and threatened two victims.
The incident didn’t stop there. Investigators determined that Sayegh also damaged a vehicle parked in the driveway, smashing the hood before officers managed to confront her. Even then, Sayegh allegedly resisted attempts to peacefully take her into custody, forcing officers to subdue her at the scene.
Initially, Sayegh was served with charges via summons, pending a court appearance. However, given the grave nature of the allegations and the public trust at stake, Prosecutor Billhimer’s office moved quickly to upgrade the charges. On April 28, Sayegh was re-charged by warrant and taken into custody at her Toms River residence. She is currently being held at the Ocean County Jail, awaiting a detention hearing.
Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the situation, given Sayegh’s position as a law enforcement officer entrusted with upholding the very laws she now stands accused of violating.
The investigation remains ongoing.
