TOMS RIVER: Flames Engulf Home, Firefighters Pull Off Pet Rescue

A raging fire tore through a mobile home on Aviary Way early Thursday morning, sending plumes of thick smoke into the sky and prompting a rapid response from local fire departments.

The call came in just after 7:00 AM, and within minutes, firefighters from the Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire Department—joined by units from Silverton, East Dover, and Whitesville—rushed to the scene. As they arrived, flames had already punched through the roof, devouring the structure with alarming speed.

With the fire threatening to consume the entire home, Assistant Chief Hafner (3010) took command, ordering crews to deploy an 1¾-inch hose line and initiate a search-and-rescue operation. Time was of the essence—not for the homeowner, who had already left for the day, but for the five cats still trapped inside.

Braving intense heat and thick smoke, firefighters fought their way into the burning home, methodically searching for signs of life. As flames licked at the structure’s framework, the team worked swiftly, containing the inferno within 15 minutes.

Despite the chaos, all five cats were safely located and removed from the home. No injuries were reported, and the fire was successfully extinguished before it could spread to neighboring structures.

Fire crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours, ensuring no hidden embers reignited. Meanwhile, fire inspectors launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Toms River Bureau of Fire Prevention Inspectors LaVigne and Oeskovic have determined that the fire originated in the kitchen and appears to be accidental. Further details are pending a full report.
