Toll Hikes On 4 Bridges Connecting NJ And Philly Go Into Effect On Sunday

After a 13-year freeze, drivers crossing the Delaware River Port Authority’s four bridges between New Jersey and Philadelphia – the Walt Whitman, Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross and Commodore bridges – are facing a toll increase.

The new toll rate of $6, up from $5, aims to fund safety and security upgrades and infrastructure improvements.

The authority’s board voted unanimously to adopt the new toll rate schedule on July 17, citing the need for fiscal responsibility and safety. Despite a steady increase in traffic and revenue, levels remain below pre-COVID pandemic numbers.

The toll increase will fund $794.2 million in essential capital projects over five years, including reinforcing bridge collision protection systems and painting and rehabilitating the Commodore Barry Bridge deck.

Additionally, the revenue will support more competitive salaries for police officers. Tolls on trucks, mobile homes, and recreational vehicles will also increase.

However, commuters with NJ E-ZPass who make 18 or more round-trip bridge crossings per month can apply for a frequent bridge traveler discount.
