The deadline for New Jersey residents to register to vote in the upcoming election is here. Those looking to participate in the November General Election must be registered by Tuesday, Oct. 15.
New Jersey provides several ways for its residents to register to vote. The most convenient method is online registration, which can be done through the New Jersey Division of Elections website. To register online, voters need their date of birth and either a valid New Jersey driver’s license, a non-driver ID card, or a Social Security number.
For those preferring to register by mail, voter registration forms can be printed from the state’s website. Once filled out, the forms must be sent to the County Commissioner of Registration or the Superintendent of Elections in the voter’s county. Mail-in registration forms must also meet the Oct. 15 deadline.
Residents who prefer to register in person may do so at their county’s election office before the deadline.
Permanent Voter Registration
Once registered, voters in New Jersey do not need to re-register annually. Voter registration remains valid unless a person moves or changes their party affiliation.
To confirm voter registration status, residents can check their information through the New Jersey Division of Elections’ online portal. Ensuring that personal details such as name and birth date are entered correctly will help avoid issues on election day.
Eligibility Requirements
To register, an individual must be:
- A U.S. citizen.
- At least 17 years old, although they cannot vote until they are 18.
- A resident of their county for at least 30 days before the election.
- Not currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction.
For those who miss the Oct. 15 deadline, registration is still possible but will not apply to the upcoming November election.
