TICK-ING TIME BOMB: 2023 Tick Season Forecast To Be Worst Ever

Tick populations are reaching alarming levels, setting the stage for a potential health crisis this summer, experts are warning. The imminent danger lies in the prevalence of tick-borne diseases, with Lyme disease at the forefront.

Leading health and insect experts describe the convergence of various factors as a perfect storm for a tick population explosion. The mild winter, coupled with a scarcity of acorns, has created ideal conditions for ticks to thrive and emerge earlier than usual. Similar to other insects, ticks have benefited from the milder winter temperatures, enabling them to multiply rapidly.

Ticks are most prevalent in tall grass and wooded areas, particularly where large animals like deer reside. To mitigate the risk of encountering ticks, experts advise staying in the center of trails while hiking through wooded areas. While many are familiar with deer ticks, prevalent in the Northeast and carriers of Lyme disease, it is essential to remember that different tick species can be found throughout the United States, each carrying a range of diseases.

Before venturing outdoors, it is crucial to take preventive measures. Wearing long sleeves and pants, and tucking pant legs into socks, is recommended, especially when traversing tall grass or wooded areas. Additionally, using a tick repellent containing DEET, following the instructions provided by the manufacturer, can offer an added layer of protection. For extended outdoor activities like camping, seeking clothing and camping gear treated with permethrin is advised.

Upon returning home from activities in the wilderness, thorough tick checks are vital. It is crucial to inspect every part of the body from head to toe. In case a tick is found, it should be removed carefully, ensuring a slow and steady pull to avoid breaking off the mouthparts and leaving them in the skin. Following tick removal, thoroughly washing hands and the bite site with soap and water is essential. Ticks should be disposed of by flushing them down the toilet or wrapping them tightly in tissue before placing them in a closed receptacle. If a tick bite is suspected, seeking medical attention promptly is highly recommended.
