The Square Marks 5-Year Milestone with Senior Expo, Luncheon in Lakewood

Hundreds of seniors from across Lakewood gathered Tuesday at Ateres Esther Hall to mark the fifth anniversary of The Square, an organization that has become a central hub for programming, resources, and social engagement within the township’s growing senior community.

Founded five years ago, The Square is led by Director Mrs. Chani Stefansky, with support from Lakewood Township Senior Services Liaison Mrs. Dvora Hertz. The organization recently relocated to a new headquarters at Clifton Avenue and Third Street, placing it in the center of downtown Lakewood and expanding its accessibility.

While Lakewood is known for its unusually young population — with a median age of just 18, making it one of the youngest municipalities in the country — officials and organizers noted that the township is also home to a substantial and expanding senior population. Many older residents live in age-restricted communities, while others relocate to Lakewood later in life to be closer to family and take advantage of its suburban setting.

The anniversary event began with an expo featuring a range of services tailored to seniors, including legal and financial planning, healthcare and mental health resources, and new technologies. Attendees had the opportunity to meet directly with vendors and service providers. Each participant also received a welcome packet prepared in coordination with Lakewood Township and the Zahav organization, which included a detailed map and a directory of local government, organizational, and emergency resources.

During a women’s luncheon held in the main ballroom, Hertz reflected on the organization’s growth over the past five years, telling attendees that its success had surpassed initial expectations. She also pointed to the role of local government in supporting its development.

A number of local, county, and federal officials attended the event, including Deputy Mayor Menashe Miller, Committeemen Meir Lichtenstein and Debbie Fuentes, Township Manager Pat Donnelly, Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, and representatives from the offices of Congressman Chris Smith and Assemblyman Avi Schnall.

During the program, Lichtenstein presented an official township proclamation recognizing The Square’s contributions to Lakewood’s senior community. He also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between municipal, county, and state partners in supporting local initiatives.

Mrs. Miriam Tress, a co-founder of The Square, spoke about the role of seniors in the broader community, describing them as an integral part of Lakewood’s social fabric.

The event concluded with a keynote address from educator and speaker Mrs. Dina B. Smith, who addressed a range of issues relevant to seniors.
