Governor Mikie Sherrill’s administration announced Wednesday that approximately 5,100 voter registrations have been removed from New Jersey’s voter rolls following an ongoing review of a Motor Vehicle Commission software error that resulted in individuals being registered incorrectly.
According to the administration, another approximately 1,450 registrations have been changed to “rejected” status pending additional review by county election officials. Those individuals will not be permitted to vote unless their eligibility is verified.
State officials said approximately 340 people who were newly registered as a result of the system error cast ballots. Separately, officials identified approximately 220 people affected by the error who voted but also had previous voter registrations or other records indicating they may have been validly registered. Those cases are being referred to county officials for further review.
The issue was first identified on July 21. The Statewide Voter Registration System was temporarily taken offline so election officials could preserve records and make necessary changes. Counties have now been directed to complete remaining reviews before voting begins.
Sherrill said her administration is working to “correct our voter rolls” while ensuring eligible New Jersey residents are not disenfranchised. The state’s investigation into how the MVC system error occurred remains ongoing.
