Charges have been brought against Matthew Sickler, a 35-year-old officer in New Jersey’s Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, for allegedly threatening to kill a woman by pointing a gun at her head.
Sickler has been charged with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, eluding and resisting arrest, and possession of an unlawful weapon. He is currently being held without bail at the Ocean County jail. The incident occurred in Plumsted in a residential area late last week.
Sickler has a history with the law, having been previously charged with simple assault and obstruction after a fight at a hotel in Bordentown Township in September.
He has been suspended without pay, and the sheriff’s office will take administrative action once the court case is concluded.
The Mercer County sheriff, Jack Kemler, has stated that Sickler’s actions violate the trust and confidence placed in law enforcement officers, and that such behavior will not be tolerated.
