Residents across Ocean County were on high alert Tuesday evening as a tornado warning was issued for Lakewood, Jackson, Toms River, and surrounding areas.

The alert came as a powerful line of thunderstorms swept through the region, bringing torrential rain, strong wind gusts, and vivid lightning.
While the National Weather Service warned of potential tornado activity, no funnel cloud was ever confirmed to have touched down. Still, the storm made its presence felt. Dozens of reports of flooded roadways and basement-level flooding came in from across the region, and scattered power outages were reported in multiple neighborhoods.
In Lakewood’s Westgate development, fire crews responded to what was initially believed to be a structure fire. A frightened resident had seen flashes of lightning near her home and, fearing the worst, called 911. Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and confirmed there was no fire—just a false alarm triggered by intense lightning.
Officials are urging residents to remain cautious during severe weather events and to avoid driving through flooded roadways.
Despite the chaos, no injuries have yet been reported.
