Sen. George Helmy to Step Down, Paving Way for Senator-Elect Andy Kim’s Early Swearing-In

New Jersey interim Senator George Helmy, appointed following the resignation of Bob Menendez after his federal corruption conviction, will step down this weekend, allowing Senator-elect Andy Kim to be sworn in ahead of schedule.

The move, announced when Helmy was appointed earlier this year by Governor Phil Murphy, aligns with the plan for Helmy to vacate the seat early to ensure a seamless transition for the winner of the November election. Murphy emphasized his commitment to allowing the “democratically chosen winner” to take office promptly and prepare for the new session of Congress in January.

Kim, who defeated Republican businessman Curtis Bashaw in the general election, will make history as the first Korean-American U.S. Senator when he is sworn in on Monday.

Helmy, a former chief of staff to Governor Murphy, served for just over two months, during which he focused on confirming 20 judicial nominations and resolving over 100 constituent cases. Despite his brief tenure, Helmy said he is proud of his accomplishments and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve. He also confirmed working closely with Kim since the election to ensure a “seamless transition.”

“I never intended to pursue elected office, but it has been an honor to serve the people of New Jersey during this crucial period,” Helmy said in a statement.

Kim’s swearing-in comes amid ongoing legal troubles for Menendez, whose corruption conviction included allegations of using his political influence to protect bribe-paying associates and secure lucrative deals. Menendez has denied the charges and recently filed for a new trial, alleging improper evidence was presented during jury deliberations.
