SCAM ALERT: Lakewood Man Nearly Loses $3,000 To Jury Scammer

A Lakewood man was recently targeted by a sophisticated phone scam. The victim received a call from a person claiming to be a representative of the court, stating that he had failed to report for jury duty and would be arrested if he didn’t pay a fine of $3000.

The scammer, who spoofed the Ocean County Sheriff’s phone number, instructed the victim to withdraw the cash and bring it to the Ocean County Court House. Once there, the victim was told to convert the money into binary currency at a local Shoprite or Stop and Shop store.

Fortunately, before transferring the funds, the victim contacted the Jury Management office and confirmed that there was no warrant for his arrest. The scam was foiled, and the victim avoided losing $3000.
