SAY ‘THANK YOU’: Tuesday Is National Bus Driver Appreciation Day

While the morning rush in the Lakewood area is characterized by frantic schedules and heavy traffic, today carries a slight shift in tone. Tuesday marks National School Bus Driver Appreciation Day – marked annually on the fourth Tuesday of April – aiming to highlight the people tasked with navigating 15-ton vehicles through the local suburban grid.

The Lakewood Student Transportation Authority (LSTA) reached out to parents recently with a reminder: the people getting students to and from school safely every day often do so without much fanfare. Their message was simple—while the day won’t stop the commute, a quick “thank you” or a brief acknowledgement at the bus stop can go a long way in showing drivers they aren’t invisible.

The job itself is a grind. Drivers manage a high-stakes environment, balancing the safety of dozens of children with the unpredictability of New Jersey drivers, all while keeping a rigid schedule.

As the LSTA put it, today is just about “spreading a little extra gratitude” to the people who ensure the most important part of the morning—the kids—actually get where they need to be.
