Howell welcomed in new leadership as John Leggio was sworn in as mayor on New Year’s Day, marking a return to Republican control after eight years under Democratic leadership.
The ceremony, attended by a large gathering of residents, community leaders, and political figures, was led by Republican gubernatorial candidates Jack Ciattarelli and Bill Spadea. His presence highlighted the GOP’s resurgence in local governance. Assemblyman Avi Schnall, representing Howell as part of the 30th District, delivered remarks commending the incoming officials and stressing the need for bipartisan cooperation to address the township’s needs.
Leggio’s journey to the mayor’s office was marked by a tightly contested Republican primary in June. He narrowly defeated Ian Nadel by a margin of 54 votes, with Fred Gasior finishing third. In the general election, Leggio achieved a decisive victory over Democratic opponent John Hughes, securing more than double the votes.
In addition to Leggio, Evelyn Malsbury O’Donnell was sworn in for another term on the township council. O’Donnell, also a Republican, led the race with nearly 15,000 votes, outperforming Democratic and independent challengers.
The reorganization meeting, held at Town Hall’s second-floor chamber on Route 9, reflected strong public interest in the township’s new direction.
Mayor Leggio expressed confidence in the future, pledging to prioritize fiscal responsibility, enhance infrastructure, and strengthen public safety initiatives. His administration is expected to focus on economic growth and community development.
