The Lakewood Township Committee held its annual reorganization meeting Thursday morning, resulting in key appointments across the township government. Among the notable decisions was the reappointment of Ray Coles as Mayor, marking his 12th one-year term in office and his 8th consecutive year holding the position.
Coles, first elected as a committeeman in 2001, has previously served as mayor in 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, and every year from 2017 through 2023. His reappointment for 2024 continues his long-standing leadership, despite the township’s supposed policy of rotating the mayoral position among council members.
Sources within the township government revealed that the decision to reappoint Coles was not agreed upon by the full committee before a vote was held – as is supposed to be standard practice. Reports suggest the appointment was made unilaterally by one or two individuals without a formal vote or discussion. In fact, the decision was leaked to The Lakewood Scoop before several committee members were even informed.
Additionally, Menashe Miller was reappointed as Deputy Mayor for another year.
And, as always, the reorganization meeting was held virtually, making it difficult for residents to have their voice heard at the meeting.
