Presidents’ Day 2025: What’s Open, What’s Closed, and What You Need to Know

Presidents’ Day, observed on the third Monday of February, is a federal holiday with a rich history. Originally established to honor the birthday of George Washington after his passing, the holiday later expanded to recognize other U.S. presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, who also had a February birthday. The shift to “Presidents’ Day” came with the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which aimed to provide more three-day weekends for federal employees. Today, the holiday celebrates all past and present U.S. presidents.

Presidents’ Day is a federal and state holiday, making it the third official holiday of the year. Like other holidays that follow the Uniform Monday Holiday Act—such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, and Columbus Day—the date of Presidents’ Day changes each year.

With Presidents’ Day 2025 underway, here’s a look at what is open and closed.

Mail and Delivery Services

  • U.S. Postal Service: All post offices will be closed, and there will be no regular mail delivery. Only Priority Mail Express will be delivered.
  • FedEx & UPS: FedEx will operate on a modified service schedule, while UPS will remain open. However, UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries will be delayed due to the federal holiday.
  • Amazon: No delivery disruptions are expected, and packages should arrive as scheduled.

Most banks will be closed in observance of the holiday. The exception is TD Bank, which will remain open on Presidents’ Day.

Financial markets will pause for the holiday. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and bond markets will be closed on Monday, February 17.

Most grocery stores will be open, but hours may vary by location. Major shopping centers and retailers will be open as usual.

All New Jersey MVC locations will be closed for the holiday. However, some services will still be available online. All New Jersey state offices and courts will be closed on Presidents’ Day as well.

NJ Transit buses and trains will operate on either a weekday, Saturday, or holiday schedule, depending on the route. Riders should check the NJ Transit trip planner for accurate times.

After Presidents’ Day, the next federal holiday will be Memorial Day, observed on Monday, May 26, 2025.

For those planning their day, it’s best to check with specific locations for hours of operation, as schedules may vary.
