The Lakewood Police Department said today that its police officers were assaulted by a drunk man in downtown Lakewood on Saturday night.
Police said that at midnight on May 18, Officer Bryan Vega responded to the New Jersey Transit station on Main Street for a report of a disorderly intoxicated male. The police officer found Manuel Romero-Olivera, a 24-year-old from Howell, drunk and acting belligerently.
First Aid was called to handle the drunk man, but before they could transport him to the hospital, “he became combative and assaulted the police officers,” Lakewood police said. The officers were not seriously injured by the man’s violence.
He was subsequently arrested for Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer and charged with related offenses.
Officers William Bowers and Richard Uriarte assisted in the investigation.

May 18, 2024, at 4 p.m., Officer Matthew McAvoy patrolled in the area of 1st. & Madison Avenue at the muster station and observed Raul Reyes-Aguilar, 25, from Lakewood, N.J. from previous encounters. Dispatch confirmed an active warrant, and he was subsequently arrested.
Officers Jon Pederson, Felix Rivera, Joseph Soriano, and Connor Woods assisted in the investigation.
DWI
May 15, 2024, at 1 a.m., Officer Daniel Hourigan responded to the area of Main Street for a male party sleeping behind the wheel. The officer located the vehicle described by dispatch. Santos Lemus, 47, from Lakewood, N.J. was arrested for DWI and charged with related offenses.
Sgt. Christopher Garretson and Officers Leomaxi Dilone, Nicholas Romeo, and Wendell Hunter assisted in the investigation.
DWI
May 18, 2024, at 12:30 a.m., Sgt. Kenneth Schaal and Officer Gregory Cannon responded to an erratic driver in the area of Cedarbridge Avenue called in by Shomrim Safety Patrol. The officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic motor vehicle stop. Juan Gonzalezmontes was arrested for DWI and charged with related offenses.
Officer Joseph Mandelbaum assisted in the investigation.
