An off-duty police sergeant from the Point Pleasant Police Department found himself in handcuffs after he was caught allegedly stealing more than $200 in groceries from the Walmart on Route 88 in Brick.
Josh Gunnell, a 41-year-old resident of Point Pleasant, is charged with shoplifting/concealing merchandise valued between $200 and $499. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Wednesday morning.
The complaint against Gunnell says that he was caught by Walmart security removing items from his cart at a self-checkout register, but only scanning one item. Walmart employees stepped in and scanned the missed items, but Gunnell had additional items hidden under reusable shopping bags and in the top shelf of the cart that were never scanned. He then walked off and attempted to leave the store when he was confronted by an employee.
Gunnell has an annual salary of $146,589, and is currently suspended with pay.
