The Manchester Township Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent text messages that falsely claim to be from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
According to police, the messages inform recipients that they owe unpaid tolls and threaten penalties such as driver’s license suspension, registration blocks, and additional fines if payment is not made immediately. Authorities emphasized that the messages are not legitimate.
Officials said the MVC does not send unsolicited text messages demanding urgent payment or threatening enforcement actions. Residents are advised not to click on any links or provide personal or financial information in response to such messages.
Police recommend deleting the messages immediately. Anyone concerned about potential toll violations should contact the MVC directly through its official website or verified phone numbers.
Authorities also urged residents who may have already shared personal information to report the incident to their local police department or file a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
The warning comes as similar toll-related phishing scams have been reported in multiple areas, with scammers attempting to exploit concerns about fines and license penalties to obtain sensitive information.
