Opinion: The Lakewood Police Department — Rotten to the Core

The stench of corruption oozing from the Lakewood Police Department should make every resident gag. If you think the grotesque injustice happening in the case of R’ Binyomin Kubani is a one-off, you’re painfully mistaken. It is merely the tip of a very filthy iceberg — an iceberg built on rot, backroom deals, and a disgraceful betrayal of the public trust.

Let’s start with this jaw-dropping revelation: the Lakewood Police Department, with the full knowledge of Chief Greg Meyer, hands out encrypted police radios to a local news operator. That same operator gets an official police ID — not to help save lives, but to barrel to emergency scenes and snap photos to sell clicks. This is not “serving the klal.” This is profiting off tragedy with the direct assistance of the Lakewood Police. And the law is crystal clear: New Jersey police officers are strictly prohibited from sharing videos or images obtained in the course of emergency or criminal investigations. Yet these images get passed around like party favors. That’s a flagrant crime. Where is the accountability?

The Lakewood Police Department has proven itself absolutely incapable of following its own mandate to protect and serve. The question is, who’s to blame? The answer is — nearly everyone.

Start with Chief Greg Meyer, a man who seems completely absent from the biggest crisis in his own department. When the roshei yeshiva gathered Sunday to discuss the travesty happening to R’ Binyomin Kubani, it wasn’t Meyer who showed up, but Captain Steve Allaire. Where was Meyer? Nowhere to be found. And let’s be honest: he is physically unfit for the job, as anyone can see. He recently had to be airlifted by helicopter from a vacation for a medical emergency. How can he manage the chaos in Lakewood if he can’t even show up for a critical meeting with our rabbinic leaders?

Then there are the askanim. Where were they? If they truly served the klal, R’ Binyomin Kubani would have been home before Shabbos. Guilty or not, his basic rights would have been protected in any other Jewish community — Monsey, Flatbush, you name it. Here in Lakewood, the askanim either didn’t care or had other priorities, like racing to plane crashes with their sirens so they can put up a video, or springing their own kids from arrests (more to come on this in future exposes).

It is a sickening betrayal.

The takeaway is as clear as daylight: the Lakewood Police Department is rotting from the top down, and the askanim who should hold them to account are more worried about maintaining their own power and PR than protecting the community they claim to serve. As Mark Twain famously said, “diapers and politicians have to be changed often, and for the same reason.”

Lakewood needs to change its diaper — starting with Chief Greg Meyer. If the township committee refuses to remove him, they deserve to be voted out, one by one. And once Meyer is gone, we need a total moral reset — one that sends a loud message to corrupt “askanim” and anyone else using the police like their personal security guards: Get lost.

Lakewood deserves a police department that truly protects, serves, and respects its people. Enough with the lies. Enough with the dirty deals. Enough with the cover-ups.

The time for change is right now.

  1. Pretty obvious now. This whole unfortunate incident has been played up to promote this website over the other.
Our town has a very good relationship with the police department. For a few clicks, you are going to ruin it?

    • What does the ‘good relationship’ help, if they can throw a guy in jail like that with a straight face,
      No statement
      No apology
Rabbis having to beg at 2am with no results

And TLS is complicit, they should be shut down for good, they can take down all thier dumb billboards, basketball teams, ‘ask the mayer’ segments that go nowhere, with them. Nobody needs them

    • ROTTEN TO THE CORE!! ROTTEN TO THE CORE!! THEY GAVE OUT A RADIO TO A LOCAL MEDIA OUTLET!!! AND WHEN THE CHIEF WAS HOSPITALIZED HE MISSED A MEETING WITH THE BMG ROSHEI YESHIVA!! ROTTEN ROTTEN ROTTEN!!!

  2. Which elected officials that we vote in have a say on the chiefs actions?
    How about having them replaced?
We keep voting in the same people and expect different results,
    Time for new faces,
    Drain the swamp!!!!!!

  3. Opinion: This article is a little bit too strongly worded, but it properly expresses the current feelings of the public.

  4. Wow I was waiting for this for a while, ur 100% right and may we be zoiche to see the geulah and the downfall of these corrupt policemen and select Jewish “activists” who r”l are siding with the police and against the Jewish community

  5. What happens when your involved in a hit and run accident and Alex Guzman covers it up to protect his friend.? How much money of our tax dollars goes to Chief Meyer and his stepson Alex Guzmans Family? Do you know that Alex Guzman is the highest paid employee of Lakewood Police, making more money than hours in a year?

  6. So nobody actually cares about the person sitting in jail. This is about a personal agenda that Lakewood Alerts appears to have.

    • There is quite obviously nothing to do about this fellow getting out of jail until he sees a judge which regardless of how much your protest or get mad won’t happen till Monday. No might be an opportunity to bring attention to how this incident happened in the first place and what can be done to prevent future such incidents.

  7. Lets not be fooled, chief Meyer has a boss and that is Meir Lichtenstein poloce commissioner he has done nothing for this community other than grow his property management business. He has a regime we need to take record of every liason, what have they done for the yachid who can stand uo and say they were personally helped by any other them? Noone the time has come for change and change now we need a resignation from the chief and them vote out the committee

  8. While I agree with you on alot here, tls is your competition, how is it okay for you to talk bad about them, you got no class to yourself

  9. 100% enough is enough with these corrupt politicians sitting in the Catskills while the Roshei Hayeshiva have to stop what they’re doing and go at 2am to the police station to take care of something that the “elected officials” should be taking care of!!
    #Totally absurd!

  10. Thank you Lakewood alerts for posting the REAL NEWS and keep exposing the corrupt PD

  11. People here have no idea what it actually means to have an antisemitic police department. We are in such a better place compared to what it was like 30 and 40 years ago.

  12. Pressure must be placed on the advertisers of said website.
We cannot stand by while they actively suppress important stories in order to protect those who act against our community—consistently putting profit ahead of morality.

Although their influence is fading, The Scoop still has a large following, many of whom are unaware of their insidious agenda and the way they manipulate the news narrative for a broad, unsuspecting audience.

There is no reason any frum individual, community organization, or business should continue to support them.

A list of their advertisers will be released shortly. Please take the time to respectfully reach out to these businesses and explain how their support for The Scoop is harming our community

  13. Unfortunately, the chief of police is very sick and in the hospital.

Regarding giving out goodies to your friends, guess what? It happens in every police department, and nothing will change.

That said, I think this story should have been dealt with much quicker and much smoother, and if some people have to go, then so be it.

I do think the regular police officers are doing a great job, and we thank them for that!!!

  14. So you want to Defund the Police? Go move to NY and vote for Mamdani. We like our police department. Yes, there was a mess up here, but it will get straightened out. Unless those kids protesting out there ruin our good relationship with LPD.

  15. Seems like your bringing the current situation and one other story of a radio given to a local new guy (likely your competitor). Not much of a “expose'” of “corruption” and “stench”.
It’s a rant about nothing… written by your own editors…

  16. This is all about a war between websites. Enogh said.
The real askanim (the ones who don’t spend their whole day posing for pictures on Lakewood Alerts) will bring this guy home. This website will cause irreparable damage the goodwill he have with LPD. All because they give the other guy better access and info? Grow up already!

    • Reading this article and comments led me to 2 conclusions.
      1. This site has far juicer LH than TLS allows in its comment section
      2. The operator of this site really, really wants a police radio.

  17. Interesting how there is no mention of the accident chasers who is paying off cops. Also interesting how the person who wrote this article is an NYPD liason and uses that to obtain info. Double standards much?

  18. This website is sickening. All he does is try to create division in the community and sinas chinam.

Just go back to Brooklyn already and take your garbage website with you!

  19. Everyone knows how corrupt the LPD is. No one has the guts to do anything. What about the guy who started a phony police foundation, brought lots of donuts and now represents us.

    Where is he now?

  20. The bottom line is, this liason and the rest of them ARE NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. WHY DO WE NEED THESE POLICE LIAISONS. TO KISS UP AND DP NOTHING?!?!?!?!?

Great article. Keep up the pressure.

  21. Maybe time to have enough Jewish police officers representative of %of the population, let’s not worry about Shabbas as this is turning into pekuach nefeah get proportion demographic inside police biased on intelligence and values of the town they protect and serve

    • Who is this Sam Silver? Is it really your name, because I know someone in Lakewood with that name, won’t appreciate you using his name to blog.

  22. This will blow over and long be forgotten come Election Day. The same people will be voted in. And the police keep harassing us with tickets many of them false.

    • False ticketing. That’s a joke. There are more accidents in that town than any other. Perhaps if you followed the laws and not your own things would improve.

  23. Askanim are full of trash until you need a favor from them you won’t understand there officially for the klal but they won’t give anything from there own comfort for anyone else. I know from experience stay far away from them
Yes I know someone will say that I’m wrong and yes there are yotzie min klal but the majority are full of themself

  24. The main news channel that has to be shut down is CBN he a dangerous guy he started his chat by bashing his competitors all of them and everyone who he could think of and posting as much lashon hara as possible he a ex cash advance shark that should be enough to send him flying he’s a self proclaimed askan who just hurts people along the way no one needs him he should go back to the cash advance business he started he’s channel to help the he kept saying it has nothing to do with money full of garbage
    End rant

  25. Total motzei sheim ra! I happen to know for a fact that Meir Lichtenstein has done a tremendous amount for both yechidim and for the klal at large. He is an absolute ish hachesed. For you to write what you did I’m not sure I would sleep at night if I had written such blazen motzei sheim ra!

  26. The police department is not there to be given mussar and instructions by roshei Yeshiva who are also not elected by anyone. The alleged perp will have his day in court like all alleged peeps and we will all then see where the truth is.

  27. Go back to Flatbush. Most people don’t see the Lakewood police department as an issue. There is clearly something going on here we don’t understand.

  28. Rebbi where did u go? What did u do? How can I go on without you? We all have to be like my rebbi and love every yid I’m sure they’re all doing their best unless it’s obvious they don’t care about their fellow brothers. Oh rebbi I miss you!

  29. Really amazing to see the level of entitlement of our community. We are not special and should not receive any special treatment. Reb Binyamin is a friend of mine, and I do not see why on paper he should be treated differently than the perps that have been accused of child luring in the past. Please correct me if I am wrong, all child endangerment cases are considered “special crimes” that require an immediate arrest and need a judge to be released. The damage that we have done to ourselves by acting this way will be very apparent in the future. You hear the uneducated people of Lakewood spewing “facts” that would make the Neturei Karta proud. At this point, the Lakewood PD has a right to be disgusted with us, as we have shown that we have no respect for the law that they swore to uphold. We only have ourselves to blame that we do not have an askan who proved their trustworthiness to the authorities, as Rabbi Schenkolewski did. It takes a huge dose of frum entitlement to think that a couple of rabbis showing up at a police station is going to result in a release from prison. This is not Russia, and heads would have been rolling on a government level if they had accommodated the RY.

If anyone has any Facts to dispute what I am saying, feel free to reply.

    • I was wondering the same thing. Legally, this is not different than the attempted abductions that we have had done to kids in our community that have always resulted in an immediate arrest (when they caught the guy).

I heard someone saying that recently, someone exposed themselves to children in a park and was not arrested. So, after a little research, I discovered that public exposure is generally a disorderly person offense. While luring (attempted kidnapping of a child is a Felony.

    • I don’t believe for a second that your friends with rabbi kubani from the way your talking . yes we should be concerned for any reports but everyone deserves a legal trail if someone excused you I doubt you would be saying the same thing witch is very common among teens excusing people they don’t like for their race there’s all the evidence that he’s 100% innocent I think ironic how your trying to ruin an innocent holy Talmud chachams reputation

  30. The corruption that this “opinion” was referencing, was the idea that a police dept could give a member of the press a $5000 incripted police radio, along with a police ID, and freedom to drive to any incident with lights and sirens, while putting people’s lives at risk, only as long as he portrays the police in only the best light. Which is one of the reasons that he wouldn’t post a thing about this story… and to add to that, you have many officers who go against hipa and send him details about emergencies that are not public… and you would think that in a situation like this, he would at least be throwing his weight around to try to help someone… Not to mention the Inzelbuch situation in the police dept…

  31. I read a lot of comments here and also the actual letter.
Bashing the Police Department, the Mayor, the Chief, the Askanim and etc will bring no good and no change.
I will explain, if you had a child in a school and he is not doing so well, you would want that the teacher should try his best to help your child he should be super super gentle and easy going with your child and of course you want that the Rebbe should not say anything Chas vechalila that might hurt the feelings of your child.
What we are right now doing to the Police Officers and all the Askanim and the Mayor and TLS and etc is equivalent to the teacher instead of being super nice with the child, the teacher starts to smack in the face and hit the child and again hit the child.

  32. Dear Elected Officials,

A father of eight has been unjustly detained for four days, solely based on the uncertain words of a teenager who claimed he was not sure whether he had been asked to enter the vehicle. At his arraignment, Detective Charles Messer refused to even take his statement, declaring, “I will not let him muddy the water with his lies.” This is a blatant disregard for due process. Detective Messer should be immediately placed on paid leave pending a thorough investigation.

Furthermore, Chief Meyer, who has been recently hospitalized with serious liver issues due to long-term alcohol abuse, is evidently unable to fulfill his responsibilities. It would be appropriate to honorably discharge him into retirement.

And to the elected officials of Lakewood, Jackson, and Toms River who have remained silent in the face of this troubling incident:
To remain silent in the presence of injustice is not neutrality — it is complicity.
