Ocean County Sherriff Officer Dies From COVID

The Ocean County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the death of 14-year officer Matthew Horton, who died Tuesday after a two-month battle with the coronavirus, the agency announced Wednesday.

Horton, a sergeant, contracted COVID-19 on duty, and his death is the agency’s first line of duty death, the sheriff’s union, PBA local 379, posted on its Facebook page.

Horton is the second officer from the agency to die in just over a week. On Feb. 14, Officer Brian Stockhoff was killed in an off-duty crash in Lakewood.
