An Atlantic City woman has been charged after authorities say she deposited fraudulent checks into a bank account and unlawfully withdrew thousands of dollars.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Shiela Harvey, 59, of Atlantic City, was charged on July 28 with two counts of theft by deception, four counts of forgery, and four counts of issuing bad checks.
According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, an investigation by the Economic Crime Unit found that Harvey opened an account at OceanFirst Bank and deposited four fraudulent checks that were purportedly drawn on a non-existent JP Morgan Bank account.
Investigators allege that Harvey then knowingly withdrew a total of $4,500 from the account on two separate occasions, despite not being legally entitled to those funds.
Harvey surrendered to the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department on July 28, where she was processed and served with the charges by summons. She was released pending a future appearance in Ocean County Superior Court.
Prosecutor Billhimer credited the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Unit and the Little Egg Harbor Township Police Department for their work on the investigation.
