Ocean County Launches ‘Goal: Zero’ to Combat Rising Traffic Deaths

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office will be collaborating with the Manchester Township Police Department, Brick Township Police Department, Toms River Township Police Department, Lakewood Township Police Department and Lakehurst Police Department to participate in Goal: Zero, a high-visibility county-wide traffic enforcement detail to address the staggering rise in traffic deaths in New Jersey.  As of March 18, 101 people had lost their lives on New Jersey roadways, 13 of those deaths have occurred in Ocean County.

“We are committed to holding reckless drivers accountable and enforcing traffic laws to reduce crashes. Every decision behind the wheel matters – speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving puts lives at risk.  Ensuring highway safety is a shared responsibility.  Traffic crashes are preventable, and this initiative is about saving lives through enforcement, education, and community engagement,” Prosecutor Billhimer stated.

“On Thursday, March 27, 2025, from 3:00 pm-7:00 pm, the above mentioned police departments will focus their attention on State Highway 70.  This will coincide with Goal: Zero enforcement by officers in Monmouth County on State Highway 35.  Between both Counties, approximately 55 miles of roadway will be simultaneously enforced.  Goal: Zero traffic details will be held on the last Thursday of every month from March through September,” Prosecutor Billhimer concluded.

Holmdel Township Patrolman Matt Menosky was the catalyst behind the 2024 Goal: Zero campaign, which brought together 36 municipalities to target dangerous driving behaviors.  The bright green color of the Goal: Zero logo represents high visibility and is the color for pedestrian and school safety.  The black bar is a mourning band for all lives lost in traffic crashes.
