As spring ushers in Jersey-fresh fruits and vegetables, Ocean County is making it easier for older adults to enjoy the season’s bounty — at no cost.
Commissioner Robert S. Arace announced the return of the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), a partnership between the Ocean County Office of Senior Services and the State of New Jersey. The initiative provides eligible low-income seniors with $40 in vouchers to purchase locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, and even honey from participating farmers markets.
“This is an outstanding program that allows our seniors to sample some of the nutritious and mouth-watering Jersey-fresh fruits and vegetables that soon will be harvested in Ocean County,” Arace said.
Vouchers can be used between May 1 and September 30 at approved farm stands and markets throughout the county. In 2025, participating vendors will be located in Lakehurst, Forked River, Barnegat, Beach Haven, Surf City, Brick, Seaside Park, Toms River, New Egypt, Bay Head, and Tuckerton.
“This initiative is part of Ocean County’s ongoing commitment to senior health and nutrition,” Arace added. “We want to ensure that no senior goes hungry, while also promoting healthier diets and supporting local agriculture.”
To qualify for the program, seniors must be 60 years of age or older and meet state income requirements. A household of one must earn $28,953 or less annually, with an additional $9,953 allowed for each additional household member.
Last year, Ocean County seniors redeemed more than $83,000 worth of produce through the voucher program — a boost for both senior nutrition and the local farming economy.
For more information or to apply, contact the Ocean County Office of Senior Services at (732) 929-2091. Approved applicants will receive a voucher booklet and a full list of participating vendors and market locations.
Yes I live only on SS and am very interested in this help for fresh produce. It is so important. Can’t have sugar, salt, etc and that is what is found in canned items. Thank you
