Ocean County Jury Convicts Woman in Deadly 2022 Crash Tied to Marijuana Use

An Ocean County jury has convicted a Manchester Township woman in a high-profile vehicular homicide case that prosecutors say underscores the dangers of driving while high — and could set the tone for how New Jersey courts treat marijuana impairment in fatal crashes.

Danielle Bowker, 33, was found guilty on two counts of third-degree vehicular homicide after a five-week trial over a 2022 wreck that left two men dead and two others injured on a rural stretch of Route 571. The case has drawn attention not only because of its deadly toll, but also because prosecutors presented toxicology results showing Bowker was a “recent, active user of marijuana” at the time of the crash — a detail that could ripple through ongoing debates over cannabis legalization and road safety.

According to investigators, Bowker’s Honda Civic veered out of its lane near Whitesville Road around 7:15 a.m. on March 29, 2022, slamming into a New Jersey Department of Transportation truck. The impact set off a chain reaction that crushed two other vehicles: a Toyota Camry, whose driver, 48-year-old Michael Sadis, was killed instantly, and a Toyota Corolla driven by 58-year-old Paul Lamberti, who later died at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

Superior Court Judge Dina M. Vicari is set to sentence Bowker on December 12. She faces up to five years in prison.

“Reckless driving is not a mistake — it is a dangerous choice that costs lives,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said after the verdict, casting the conviction as both justice for the victims’ families and a warning to drivers across New Jersey.

The case highlights a growing friction point for law enforcement and policymakers: how to police cannabis use behind the wheel in a state where marijuana is legal, but its consequences — as this verdict shows — can still prove deadly.
