Ocean County Advances $6.5M Prospect Street Overhaul Ahead of Cross Street Expansion

Ocean County officials have approved a $6.55 million reconstruction project for Prospect Street as part of a broader push to expand transportation infrastructure in one of New Jersey’s fastest-growing regions.

The project will rebuild Prospect Street between Route 9 and Cross Street — where a five-lane roadway has been proposed to connect Lakewood, Jackson, and Toms River. The upgrades will include new road surfaces, stormwater drainage, and pedestrian safety improvements, with officials pointing to mounting concerns over traffic congestion and deteriorating infrastructure.

Funding for the overhaul will come largely through $6 million in bonds or bond anticipation notes, with the remaining $550,000 covered by local or county dollars. Officials said the debt-financing approach will give the county flexibility as it evaluates long-term borrowing strategies.

The Prospect Street project comes as county leaders move forward on the larger Cross Street expansion. The project, developed by the county’s engineering department, was described by officials as a cornerstone of Ocean County’s long-term transportation plan.

While no construction timeline has been released, officials suggested the Cross Street project may be built in phases, with additional upgrades expected as part of the county’s ongoing infrastructure program.
