NO MORE FREE RIDES: Jackson Township Targets Property Owners Dodging Tax Bills

Jackson Township is moving to crack down on property owners who have fallen behind on their taxes, introducing a new ordinance that would give the Township more power to force payment from delinquent property owners.

Ordinance 2026-22, introduced last week by the Township Council, would allow Jackson to deny, suspend, or revoke certain local licenses and permits tied to properties with overdue tax bills.

Mayor Jennifer Kuhn said the measure is part of a broader push to go after property owners who have avoided or delayed paying what they owe.

“For too long, too many property owners have ignored or delayed paying the township taxes, forcing the rest of our taxpayers to carry the burden. That stops now,” Kuhn said.

Under the ordinance, property owners who are behind on taxes could be blocked from receiving or renewing permits or licenses connected to the property. If taxes remain unpaid for three consecutive quarters, the Township could move to suspend or revoke existing approvals.

The ordinance would give delinquent owners 30 days to pay or challenge the Township’s claim before action is taken. They would also have the right to a hearing before the Township Council.

Officials say the ordinance does not impose a new tax. Instead, it gives Jackson another enforcement tool to collect taxes already owed.

For rental property owners or business operators, the message is clear: pay your overdue taxes, or risk losing the permits and licenses needed to keep operating.
