New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced a comprehensive investigation into an alleged slowdown in State Police traffic enforcement from July 2023 to March 2024, citing concerns over its potential impact on public safety, including increased roadway crashes and fatalities.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Platkin emphasized the vital role the New Jersey State Police play in ensuring public safety, tackling challenges such as narcotics trafficking, gun violence, and natural disaster responses. “In my years of State government service, I have seen their work firsthand and know the deep commitment that so many Troopers have to serving the public,” Platkin said.
However, he expressed disappointment over allegations that a deliberate slowdown had tarnished the State Police’s reputation. “This well-deserved reputation for serving the public good has been tainted by the alleged and unprecedented slowdown in State Police traffic enforcement,” Platkin stated.
Platkin has appointed Preet Bharara, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and a partner at WilmerHale, as Special Counsel to oversee the investigation. Bharara will lead efforts to uncover the circumstances behind the slowdown and ensure accountability. “I have complete confidence that Mr. Bharara possesses the skill, experience, and unquestioned integrity to complete this investigation and pursue any lead, without fear or favor,” Platkin said, noting that Bharara will have full authority to conduct the investigation, while Platkin retains final decision-making power.
