Residents in the western section of Lakewood Township are seeing the completion of a major sidewalk improvement project along New Central Avenue and nearby roadways, following several months of construction work that concluded at the end of 2025.
According to township officials, more than 3,000 linear feet of new sidewalk were installed during the final three months of the year. The project created a continuous pedestrian pathway along New Central Avenue from Gudz Road to the Lakewood–Jackson border, and included additional sidewalk segments on portions of New Egypt Avenue and other nearby stretches.
Township officials said the project was the culmination of years of planning and coordination. The Lakewood Township Committee worked alongside Engineering Manager Tony Poklasny, Senior Engineer Justin Meyer, other municipal staff, county officials, contractors, and affected property owners to address logistical and engineering challenges associated with the project.
Because of varying site conditions, the design differed by location. Some sections were constructed using conventional concrete, selected for its durability and ability to withstand heavier loads near residential driveways. Other areas utilized porous concrete, which allows for improved drainage and reduces water and ice accumulation.
Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein said the project represents an important infrastructure investment for the area.
“This represents an important step in enhancing pedestrian safety in Lakewood,” Lichtenstein said, adding that the improvements also contribute to quality of life and may help reduce vehicular traffic by making walking safer and more accessible.
Township officials noted that the sidewalks are part of broader efforts to improve pedestrian infrastructure in high-traffic residential areas across Lakewood.
