New Jersey’s New E-Bike Law Now in Effect: What Riders Need to Know

A new statewide e-bike law officially took effect on July 19, 2026, introducing new licensing, registration, insurance, and safety requirements for riders across the state.

Under the new law, riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike. Riders 17 and older may use a valid driver’s license, while riders ages 15 and 16, or anyone without a valid New Jersey driver’s license, must obtain a special e-bike/moped license through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

The law also requires all e-bikes, including low-speed models, to be registered with the MVC. Insurance is required for motorized bicycles, including throttle-operated e-bikes and pedal-assist models capable of traveling between 21 and 28 mph. Low-speed pedal-assist e-bikes with a maximum speed of 20 mph are exempt from the insurance requirement.

Additionally, helmets are now mandatory for all riders, regardless of age. Motorized bicycles are also prohibited from operating on interstate highways, divided highways, and roads with speed limits exceeding 50 mph.
