New Jersey Police Launch Statewide Impaired Driving Crackdown in Honor of Ensign John Elliott

Law enforcement agencies across New Jersey will conduct a statewide impaired driving enforcement campaign on Wednesday, July 22, as part of the annual John Elliott Memorial Enforcement Initiative, aimed at removing impaired drivers from the road while honoring the legacy of U.S. Navy Ensign John R. Elliott.

Police departments throughout the state will increase DWI patrols, conduct highly visible enforcement operations, and, where appropriate, establish sobriety checkpoints as part of the initiative organized by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP).

The campaign commemorates Ensign John Elliott, an Egg Harbor Township native and U.S. Naval Academy graduate, who was killed on July 22, 2000, when his vehicle was struck by a drunk driver. The driver had been arrested for DWI earlier that evening but was released and allowed to continue driving.

The tragedy led to the creation of John’s Law, which requires the impoundment of a vehicle for 12 hours following a DWI arrest, helping prevent impaired drivers from immediately returning to the road.

Officials say the initiative also highlights the mission of the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers, founded by the Elliott family to encourage motorists to plan for a safe, sober ride home.

State and law enforcement leaders emphasized that every impaired driving crash is preventable and urged anyone planning to drink this summer to arrange a designated driver, rideshare, taxi, or other safe transportation before getting behind the wheel.

The John Elliott Memorial Enforcement Initiative is part of New Jersey’s broader Goal Zero traffic safety campaign, which focuses on reducing fatal and serious injury crashes through education, enforcement, and public awareness. Police are reminding motorists that impaired driving enforcement will be stepped up throughout the day and evening on July 22 across the Garden State.
