The National Weather Service on Friday confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in southern New Jersey during intense storms the day prior.
The NWS had issued multiple tornado warnings during Thursday’s storms, including one that covered most of Ocean County, including Lakewood, Toms River, and Jackson.
According to weather experts, the tornadoes touched down in Browns Mills and a second in East Greenwich Township. Neither tornado caused any serious injuries, though some heavy damage was incurred by trees and some structures.
There have now been 13 confirmed tornadoes in New Jersey in 2023, tying it with 2021 for the second-most tornadoes in a single calendar year. The record for tornadoes in a single year was set in 1989, when a staggering 18 tornadoes touched down in New Jersey.
