New Jersey American Water Urges Residents to Protect Pipes as Early Cold Sets In

With unusually frigid temperatures arriving across the Northeast, New Jersey American Water is urging customers to winterize their homes now to prevent frozen pipes, costly repairs, and unexpected spikes in water bills during the holiday season.

“Cold snaps can catch anyone off guard,” said Ben Morris, the company’s vice president of operations. “Taking simple steps now helps avoid costly repairs and keeps water bills lower, especially during a time when every dollar counts.” Morris also encouraged customers concerned about expenses to explore the company’s financial assistance programs.

The utility recommends several preventative measures, including locating and testing the main water shut-off valve, insulating exposed pipes, draining irrigation systems, disconnecting hoses, and letting a small stream of water run overnight during severe cold. Homeowners are also advised to open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.

If pipes do freeze, New Jersey American Water instructs residents to immediately shut off the water before attempting to thaw pipes with safe heating methods such as a hair dryer or space heater. Once thawed, water should be turned back on slowly and checked for leaks.

For those traveling, the company advises leaving thermostats set to at least 55 degrees, arranging for someone to check the home periodically, and considering freeze alarms that alert homeowners if indoor temperatures drop too low.

New Jersey American Water also highlighted its customer assistance programs, including the H2O Help to Others Program™ and flexible payment options, to ease financial burdens during winter months.

The announcement comes as New Jersey remains under a drought watch due to below-average rainfall. Customers are encouraged to conserve water and monitor usage through their MyWater accounts, with additional conservation tips available on the utility’s website and through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
